This painting is dealing with human's decision making complexity.
The title of the painting is "The next step" but it seems that the figure is still contemplating about what to do next...
Normally we consider the next step as actual physical act but can it be also the understanding that we need to stop for a moment, look at where we are and find the right thing for us to do next?
in parallel figure's legs already pointing forward as if pushing for movement and symbolizing the internal subconscious powers/wishes that pushing us while our mind is still not ready to act.
In the same time while figure's legs are strong, the foot is small and a question raises if it can hold the figure in the next step or it needs to wait till the mind is ready too so the next step will be supported by the whole figure's entity. This principle applies also for actions that require cooperation of many but only some ready to make it...

This painting is dealing with human's self made subconscious constraints and limitations that end with self-slavery.
The figure is holding a gold collar that is placed around its neck which seems as the cause of his misery.
But the figure also looks as strong enough to break the thin collar and set itself free; so why doesn't he?
Is it because he's so used to certain set of beliefs and behaviours that he doesn't believe that the collar cab be broken?
Is it because he gains something by not getting free? The collar is golden so freedom may have a price that the figure isn't ready to pay...
